Cosmic Complementarity: Probing the Acceleration of the Universe
نویسندگان
چکیده
We assess the accuracy with which Ωm and ΩΛ can be measured by combining various types of upcoming experiments. Useful expressions for the Fisher information matrix are derived for classical cosmological tests involving luminosity (e.g., SN Ia), angular size, age and number counts. These geometric probes are found to be quite complementary both to each other and to inferences from cluster abundance and the cosmic microwave background (CMB). For instance, a joint analysis of SN Ia and CMB reduces the error bars on ΩΛ by about an order of magnitude compared to a separate analysis of either data set. Probing Physics at Extreme Energies with Cosmic Ultra-High Energy Radiation
The highest energy cosmic rays observed possess macroscopic energies and their origin is likely to be associated with the most energetic processes in the Universe. Their existence triggered a flurry of theoretical explanations ranging from conventional shock acceleration to particle physics beyond the Standard Model and processes taking place at the earliest moments of our Universe. Furthermore...
متن کاملInhomogeneous Equation of State, cosmic Acceleration and Deceleration during Phantom-dominance
Taking inhomogeneous equation of state for phantom fluid in RS-II model, it is shown that universe decelerates also after acceleration in certain cases. This is in contrast to earlier results of phantom universe exhibiting acceleration only.
متن کاملApproaches to Understanding Cosmic Acceleration
Theoretical approaches to explaining the observed acceleration of the universe are reviewed. We briefly discuss the evidence for cosmic acceleration, and the implications for standard General Relativity coupled to conventional sources of energy-momentum. We then address three broad methods of addressing an accelerating universe: the introduction of a cosmological constant, its problems and orig...
متن کاملCan the Universe escape eternal acceleration ?
Recent astronomical observations of distant supernovae lightcurves, [1]-[4], suggest that the expansion of the universe has recently begun to accelerate. Acceleration is created by an antigravitational repulsive stress, like that produced by a positive cosmological constant, or universal vacuum energy. It creates a rather bleak eschatological picture. An ever-expanding universe’s future appears...
متن کاملUltrahigh Energy Neutrinos and Cosmic Rays as Probes of New Physics
Cosmic high energy neutrinos are inextricably linked to the origin of cosmic rays which is one of the major unresolved questions in astrophysics. In particular, the highest energy cosmic rays observed possess macroscopic energies and their origin is likely to be associated with the most energetic processes in the Universe. Their existence triggered a flurry of theoretical explanations ranging f...
